About the role

The Department of Microbiology & Immunology and the Michael Smith Laboratories at the University of British Columbia are seeking a Professor in Bacteriophage Biology & Evolution. The successful candidate will lead an innovative, externally‑funded research program that advances understanding of bacteria‑phage interactions, bacterial immunity, evolution, and antimicrobial resistance.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and sustain a competitive, internationally recognised research agenda.
  • Secure external funding and manage research grants.
  • Supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in microbiology and related topics.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including the PrePARE research cluster.
  • Contribute to departmental, university, and professional service.

Required profile

  • PhD in microbiology, molecular biology, or a closely related field.
  • Post‑doctoral experience with a strong publication record in bacteriophage research.
  • Demonstrated ability to build an externally funded research program.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
