Paralegal – Residential & Tenant Relations

About the role

As a Paralegal at Homestead, you will work closely with management to provide legal advice and support on residential tenancy matters. The role involves handling rent arrears, representing the landlord at the Landlord‑Tenant Board and Small Claims Court, and assisting with social‑issue related disputes.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and file all required Landlord‑Tenant Board forms (e.g., N4‑N8).
• Attend weekly management meetings and report on legal matters.
• Advise on the Residential Tenancies Act, forms, and procedures.
• Review accounts receivable, coordinate collections, and generate weekly A/R reports.
• Maintain spreadsheets for cases requiring legal action and follow up on outstanding balances.
• Represent the landlord at hearings, motions, and reviews.
• Prepare and send Persistently Late Letters and manage payment plans.
• Liaise with housing authorities, community resources, and the sheriff’s office.
• Defend claims in Small Claims Court and manage bad‑debt records.

Required profile

• Current Law Society License in good standing.
• 2–3 years of office experience, preferably with landlord‑tenant matters.
• Knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006 and Statutory Powers Procedure Act (assets).
• Familiarity with Small Claims practice and the Freedom of Information & Privacy Act (assets).
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to meet deadlines.
• Willingness to travel as needed.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
• Experience with Yardi Voyager Accounting System.
