Occupational Health and Safety Manager

About the role

The Halifax Regional Centre for Education is seeking an Occupational Health and Safety Manager to lead its OHS program across 136 schools and support a workforce of over 11,000 employees. The role involves ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, identifying hazards, and promoting safe work environments.

Key responsibilities

• Implement and coordinate the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations across all HRCE sites.
• Identify workplace hazards, assess risks, and recommend appropriate control measures.
• Provide coaching and advice to principals and supervisors on safety legislation, incident reporting, indoor air quality, and first‑aid training.
• Facilitate Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee meetings and support the right‑to‑refuse unsafe work process.
• Maintain accurate OHS records, reports, and documentation in line with provincial requirements.

Required profile

• Post‑secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Minimum five years of OHS experience, preferably in a large, unionized environment.
• Strong knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, regulations, and best‑practice safety programs.
• Excellent communication and coaching skills to work with diverse school staff and unions.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
• Experience using database systems for tracking safety data.
