Material Handler

About the role

Maersk Logistics & Services Canada handles end-to-end warehousing and distribution logistics through its network of storage facilities, which receive, store, process and dispatch cargo. As a Conversion Material Handler, you will summarize, unload and move materials within or near a plant, yard or work site. The role has no supervisory responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

• Read work orders or follow oral instructions to find out what materials or containers to move.
• Open containers and load and unload materials onto or from pallets, trays, racks and shelves by hand.
• Load materials into vehicles and install strapping, bracing or padding to prevent shifting or damage.
• Move materials to their destination, secure lifting attachments, and signal crane or hoisting operators.
• Count, weigh and record units handled on a daily production sheet, and attach tags or labels.
• Stack or assemble materials, band bundles, clamp conveyor sections and remove samples.
• Lift heavy objects by hand or with a power hoist, clean the work area, and make simple adjustments or repairs such as realigning belts or replacing rollers.
• Operate an industrial truck or electric hoist to help load or move goods.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED, or one to three months of related experience and training, or an equivalent combination.
• Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to print and speak simple sentences.
• Bilingualism in Spanish is helpful but not necessary.
• Regularly stands, walks, climbs, balances and stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls; lifts up to 10 pounds regularly, up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
• Close, distance, color, peripheral and depth vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Required skills

• Add, subtract, multiply and divide two-digit numbers, including with units of money, weight, volume and distance.
• Apply common sense to simple one- or two-step instructions and handle standardized situations.
