Material Handler (Conversion)

About the role

Maersk Logistics & Services Canada Inc. handles end-to-end warehousing and distribution logistics through its network of storage facilities, which receive, store, process and dispatch cargo. This Conversion Material Handler loads, unloads and moves materials within or near a plant, yard or work site. The role has no supervisory responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

• Read work orders or follow oral instructions to find materials or containers to move
• Open containers and load/unload materials onto pallets, trays, racks and shelves by hand
• Load materials into vehicles and install strapping, bracing or padding to prevent shifting or damage
• Convey materials to their destination and secure lifting attachments, or signal crane and hoisting operators
• Count, weigh and record units handled on a daily production sheet, and attach tags or labels
• Stack, bundle and band materials, assemble crates, and clamp portable conveyor sections together
• Operate an industrial truck or electric hoist to help load and move goods
• Clean work areas and machines, make simple repairs such as realigning belts or replacing rollers, and shovel loose materials into hoppers or vehicles

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED, or one to three months of related experience and training
• Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to print and speak simple sentences
• Bilingualism in Spanish is helpful but not necessary
• Physical demands: regular standing, walking and climbing, and lifting up to 10 pounds regularly, up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally

• Add, subtract, multiply and divide two-digit numbers, including with American currency, weight, volume and distance
• Apply common sense to simple one- or two-step instructions
