About the role

Join WSP’s award‑winning Rail & Transit team as a Lighting Designer focused on rail and transit projects across Canada. You will blend technical expertise with real‑world impact, delivering safer, smarter, and more sustainable transportation infrastructure. The role offers a collaborative, future‑focused environment where innovative design meets rigorous standards.

Key responsibilities

  • Design roadway lighting, rail tunnel lighting, and traffic signal systems in line with applicable standards and project specifications.
  • Perform photometric analysis, lighting calculations, and system circuit design.
  • Conduct voltage‑drop calculations and prepare detailed wiring and connection diagrams.
  • Develop high‑quality contractual deliverables according to CADD requirements and design directives.
  • Review existing conditions, drawings and specifications to refine designs.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary coordination sessions to resolve interface issues.
  • Collaborate with clients, consultants and stakeholders, presenting design concepts in workshops and meetings.
  • Apply proactive, solution‑driven thinking to design challenges and client engagement.

Required profile

  • Post‑secondary diploma or degree in engineering, design, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience in lighting design or a similar technical environment.
  • Knowledge of roadway lighting, rail tunnel lighting, and traffic signal design requirements.
  • Familiarity with regional specifications (e.g., City of Toronto, Region of Peel, Toronto Hydro, Alectra) is an asset.
  • Leadership or coordination experience within multidisciplinary teams is a plus.

Required skills

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit and AGI32.
  • Experience with MicroStation (asset).
  • Ability to produce consistent CADD drawings and manage revision control.
  • Understanding of TTC/Metrolinx CADD standards and ESA/CSA codes (asset).
  • Familiarity with PHM‑125 traffic signal drawings.
