About the role

Simon Fraser University is seeking an experienced lawyer to join its Office of the General Counsel as a Legal Counsel specializing in employment and labour law. The role provides strategic and practical advice on a wide range of workplace matters, supporting the university’s academic mission while managing legal risk.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice on employee discipline, termination, investigations, accommodation, disability management, and human‑rights issues.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate employment agreements, policies, and collective‑agreement provisions.
  • Support litigation, administrative proceedings, and manage external counsel.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources, Labour Relations, Faculty Relations, and senior leadership on labour‑relations matters.
  • Monitor legal developments and deliver training and proactive guidance to stakeholders.

Required profile

  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia (or eligible for membership).
  • 4‑8 years of experience practising employment and labour law, preferably in the public sector or post‑secondary environment.
  • Strong judgment, communication, negotiation, and relationship‑building abilities.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced, collaborative setting.
