Legal Counsel, Capital Markets

About the role

The Legal Counsel, Capital Markets provides strategic legal and regulatory advice to support BMO Financial Group’s products, initiatives and policies. You will influence decisions, negotiate solutions and help minimise legal risk while driving business objectives across a global scope.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver and manage legal and regulatory advice on capital‑markets related products and strategies.
• Identify emerging legal issues, analyse implications and recommend actionable solutions.
• Exercise judgment on moderate to complex decisions within policy and regulatory frameworks.
• Instruct external counsel, ensure compliance with internal policies and act as subject‑matter expert.
• Mitigate risks, implement improvements and build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Provide specialized consulting, analytical and technical support to the assigned business group.

Required profile

• Less than 7 years of legal practice or equivalent education/experience.
• LLB or JD with a licence to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction.
• Experience in private practice, in‑house counsel or a regulatory body is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of the financial services regulatory environment.
• Fluent in both French and English.
