Learner Support Specialist (Assistive Technology)

About the role
The Learner Support Specialist (Assistive Technology) works within Student Accessibility and Achievement to develop and deliver support programs that enable students with disabilities to succeed academically. Reporting to the Team Lead, the incumbent focuses on the management, troubleshooting, and training of assistive technology tools and the conversion of complex adaptive materials.
Key responsibilities
- Collaborate with an intradisciplinary team to assess learner barriers and propose technology‑based interventions.
- Provide assistive‑technology services including lending, training, and troubleshooting for software and devices such as WordQ, Dragon, Antidote, C‑Pen, FM systems, SmartPen, and Clockwork.
- Conduct one‑on‑one appointments to determine student technology requirements for exams and other academic tasks.
- Design, suggest, and implement accessible technological solutions aligned with accommodation plans.
- Manage end‑to‑end conversion of alternative‑format materials, ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and timely delivery.
- Coordinate production and quality assurance of adaptive resources across the university.
- Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends during peak periods.
Required profile
- Experience supporting students with disabilities in a post‑secondary environment.
- Strong knowledge of accessibility standards and assistive‑technology best practices.
- Ability to assess individual learner needs and develop targeted interventions.
- Excellent communication skills for one‑on‑one student support and team collaboration.
Required skills
- Proficiency with assistive‑technology tools: WordQ, Dragon, Antidote, C‑Pen, FM systems, SmartPen, Clockwork.
- Technical troubleshooting and device configuration.
- Conversion of documents into alternative formats (e.g., Braille, audio, large print).
