Lead Data Designer

About the role

Aviva Canada is looking for a Lead Data Designer in Markham to shape its enterprise data landscape. You will define the standards, models and frameworks that make data trusted, secure and reusable across analytics, AI and digital solutions, working with business and technology partners to deliver scalable data solutions that support digital transformation and platform modernization.

Key responsibilities

• Own and govern data models for assigned domains, resolve semantic conflicts and manage shared identifiers, reference data and golden records
• Partner with business experts and data owners to define business concepts, critical data elements and domain boundaries
• Lead data design across operational stores, warehouses, data lakes, data products and relational or NoSQL platforms
• Govern modeling standards, naming conventions, design patterns and data contracts, including automated validation
• Define migration and modernization designs and optimize physical models for performance and cost
• Embed privacy, security and regulatory controls, including data residency and cross-border obligations
• Design governed datasets, semantic layers and feature models for AI use cases
• Review and approve data models, schemas, APIs and events, and manage model lifecycle, versioning and observability
• Guide and coach data, BI, analytics, AI, application, architecture, engineering and delivery teams

Required profile

• 10+ years of enterprise data modeling and design experience in large organizations, including leading large-scale or cross-domain models
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, data management, engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
• Deep knowledge of Property & Casualty insurance concepts and ACORD standards

Required skills

• Conceptual, logical and physical modeling, dimensional modeling, data vault, semantic layers, ontologies and data contracts
• Strong SQL, ETL/ELT, batch and streaming integration, APIs and change data capture
• Cloud data platforms; Snowflake, AWS data services, PostgreSQL, dbt, Airflow, AWS Glue, SAP PowerDesigner or ERwin Data Modeler are an asset
