Intake Social Worker – Part‑time (Indigenous Child Safety)

About the role

The Vancouver Aboriginal Child & Family Services Society is seeking a dedicated Intake Social Worker to join its Child Safety Program on a permanent part‑time basis. You will work directly with Indigenous children, families, and community members to ensure safety, well‑being, and culturally‑responsive care.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct intake assessments using trauma‑informed, restorative practices.
• Gather and engage the child’s Circle – family, extended family, Band or Nation.
• Identify risks, develop safety plans, and connect families with appropriate services.
• Collaborate with community partners, agencies, and legal authorities to protect children while preserving family connections.
• Maintain accurate case records in compliance with the Child, Family and Community Services Act and related federal legislation.

Required profile

• Social work degree or equivalent qualification.
• Experience working with Indigenous communities and child welfare.
• Strong understanding of the Child, Family and Community Services Act and the Federal Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children.
• Commitment to least‑intrusive, strengths‑based, and culturally safe practice.

Required skills

• Knowledge of restorative and trauma‑informed child welfare practices.
• Ability to assess risk and develop safety plans.
• Effective communication and partnership‑building with families and community stakeholders.
