Greenhouse & Field Research Assistant

About the role

The Greenhouse and Field Research Assistant supports technical activities and record‑keeping at UBC's Totem Field Station and South Campus greenhouse. The role ensures optimal conditions for scientific experiments, supervises work‑learn students, and provides technical guidance to staff and researchers.

Key responsibilities

• Perform greenhouse and field duties including crop cultivation, pest detection, biological and chemical pest control, and equipment maintenance.
• Program and maintain climate‑control systems, Rain Bird irrigation software, and oversee ordering of supplies and equipment.
• Supervise work‑learn students, coordinate space allocation for research projects, and ensure security of staff and users.
• Maintain accurate scientific records, develop standard operating procedures, and train new users on greenhouse techniques.

Required profile

• University degree in a relevant discipline or technical program with at least four years of related experience.
• Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and willingness to respect diverse perspectives.
• Relevant field experience in greenhouse production and a valid B.C. Pesticide Applicator Certificate.
• Effective communication, time‑management, and ability to lead a team.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Experience using Argus climate‑control software.
• Experience using Priva climate‑control software.
• Experience with Rain Bird irrigation software.
