Director, Data Scientist

About the role

Mastercard’s Security Solutions Data Science team is looking for a Director of Data Science to lead the creation and delivery of machine‑learning models that detect anti‑money‑laundering (AML) and crypto‑related risks across the Americas. Based in Toronto, the role combines hands‑on technical work with leadership of a small, high‑performing data‑science team in a hybrid environment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a small team of data scientists, setting priorities and ensuring outcome‑focused delivery.
• Design, develop, and iterate AML and crypto risk detection models across the full lifecycle, from data preparation to production monitoring.
• Define and evolve the technical roadmap for financial‑crime detection solutions.
• Partner with Product teams to shape offerings, identify impact opportunities, and provide data‑science insights.
• Collaborate with Engineering to establish clear ownership, efficient pipelines, and robust deployment processes.
• Maintain high standards for model quality, documentation, explainability, and governance.

Required profile

• Extensive hands‑on experience in data science focused on financial crime, AML, or fraud detection.
• Proven track record delivering production‑grade machine‑learning models at scale.
• Ability to operate autonomously, drive outcomes in ambiguous environments, and influence cross‑functional stakeholders.

Required skills

• Python programming.
• Machine‑learning model development and deployment.
• Experience with large‑scale datasets and distributed data platforms.
• Domain knowledge in AML, crypto risk detection, and financial‑crime analytics.
