Casual Police Services Positions

About the role

The City of Nanaimo is hiring casual staff to support Police Support Services and the local RCMP detachment. Positions include Switchboard Operator, Watch Clerk, Police Records Clerk, Victim Services Worker, Court Liaison Clerk, Prisoner Guard, and Custodian. All roles require successful completion of the RCMP security clearance process.

Key responsibilities

• Operate the police switchboard and handle incoming communications.
• Perform data entry and maintain accurate police records.
• Provide victim support services and liaise with community agencies.
• Coordinate court appearances and manage documentation for legal proceedings.
• Supervise detainees and ensure safety within detention areas.
• Maintain cleanliness and upkeep of police facilities.
• Support 24/7 police operations with flexible shift coverage.

Required profile

• Completion of Grade 12 (or equivalent).
• Switchboard/Watch Clerk/Records Clerk – minimum 1 year related experience, typing speed of 50 wpm and data‑entry speed of 100 strokes per minute.
• Victim Services Worker – at least 2 years victim‑services experience and a certificate in social services or a related discipline.
• Court Liaison Clerk – valid BC Class 5 driver’s licence and minimum 4 years experience in a criminal‑legal environment.
• Prisoner Guard – minimum 3 months related experience and WorkSafe BC Basic First Aid certification.
• Custodian – minimum 3 months related experience, Building Service Worker Course Level 1, and WorkSafe BC Basic First Aid certification.
