Apprentice Millwright – Student Housing & Community Services

About the role

The Apprentice Millwright will join the Student Housing and Community Services (SHCS) team at UBC, learning to install, maintain, inspect and repair a wide range of mechanical equipment. This apprenticeship provides hands‑on experience across HVAC, material handling, pumping and laboratory ventilation systems while progressing toward full journeyperson status.

Key responsibilities

• Fabricate and install new university machinery and equipment.
• Operate lathes, milling machines and other machine‑shop tools to produce parts.
• Perform inspections, preventative maintenance and diagnostic testing using the Building Management System.
• Repair or rebuild compressors, pumps, pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
• Weld, braze and solder components of HVAC, pumping and material‑handling systems.
• Install and commission HVAC equipment such as air handlers.
• Read and interpret schematics, blueprints and operating manuals.
• Use precision alignment tools (laser, dial indicators, calipers, micrometers).
• Coordinate rigging and lifting operations safely.
• Communicate with customers and other trades to ensure efficient service delivery.

Required profile

• Enrolled in or eligible for the IUOE 115 Millwright Apprenticeship program.
• Ability to follow safe work practices and comply with WorkSafe regulations.
• Willingness to work under the guidance of a Senior Millwright or designated journeyperson.
• Commitment to a four‑year apprenticeship with progressive wage increases.
