System Administrator – IT Infrastructure

About the role

We are looking for a System Administrator to manage and enhance SGL’s IT infrastructure in our Ottawa office. The role involves day‑to‑day administration of servers, networks, and cloud‑native services, ensuring high availability and security for both office staff and field crews.

Key responsibilities

• Install and administer software and hardware while monitoring and maintaining physical server infrastructure.
• Develop, implement, and maintain procedures and security controls.
• Test, monitor, and report on network performance.
• Administer system and network security on designated platforms, including perimeter and endpoint protection.
• Evaluate, deploy, and manage containerized services using Docker and build CI/CD pipelines in GitLab.
• Design and implement bare‑metal Kubernetes clusters with Ceph storage, networking, and load‑balancing solutions.
• Create access‑control reconciliation loops that enforce ACL state from authoritative directories.
• Manage virtualization platforms (VMware vSphere, Proxmox VE) for workload provisioning and resource allocation.
• Mentor junior IT staff and act as backup for the IT Manager.
• Provide timely technical support to office personnel and field crews.
• Maintain documentation, project schedules, and status reports.
• Ensure compliance with company safety policies and complete required training.

Required profile

• Post‑secondary degree or diploma in computer science, information technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Relevant experience as a System Administrator, Network Administrator, or in a similar role.
• Proficiency with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience with virtualization platforms like VMware vSphere and Proxmox VE.
• Knowledge of secrets management solutions such as HashiCorp Vault.
• Familiarity with CI/CD tooling and version‑control systems.
• Experience with infrastructure‑as‑code tools such as Terraform or OpenTofu.
• Experience with observability and monitoring tools (e.g., Prometheus).
