Speech and Language Assistant (2 positions)

About the role

Fort Vermilion School Division is seeking two Speech and Language Assistants to support its Speech‑Language Pathologists across the division for the 2026‑2027 school year. The role involves direct assistance in a variety of communication‑focused programs and services within elementary and secondary schools.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct hearing screenings under the guidance of SLPs.
• Support implementation of Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) systems, including Pragmatic Organization Dynamic Display (PODD).
• Assist students with fluency concerns such as stuttering.
• Contribute to comprehensive literacy intervention programs for students with complex communication needs.
• Facilitate oral language development in primary classrooms.
• Carry out additional duties as required to meet multidisciplinary communication recommendations.

Required profile

• Grade 12 diploma; post‑secondary education in a related field or relevant experience working with SLPs.
• Experience working with students in a school environment.
• Ability to collaborate confidentially with staff and parents.
• Successful completion of a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) and, if applicable, an Alberta Children’s Services Intervention Record Check (IRC).

Required skills

• Knowledge of AAC systems, specifically PODD.
• Experience with hearing screening procedures.
• Understanding of fluency and literacy intervention strategies.
