Senior Principal CAD Designer

About the role

CB&I, which delivers storage and asset-management solutions through its Storage Solutions and Asset Solutions business units, is hiring a Senior Principal CAD Designer in Calgary. The role uses 2D and/or 3D CAD skills and CB&I engineering and drafting templates to produce and check design deliverables such as drawings and bills of material for plate structures, foundations, structural and piping elements. It is a fast-paced, production-oriented position requiring independence, leadership and mentoring of less experienced designers.

Key responsibilities

• Produce accurate detail drawings for customer approval, fabrication and construction, and check and sign them off
• Ensure drawings are safe for field erection and consider constructability
• Set up, plan and layout projects and compare drawings and bills of material to the as-sold estimate
• Troubleshoot and maintain the programs and templates used to make detail drawings
• Maintain or approve revisions to standard and form drawings, and write knowledge-transfer materials and company procedures
• Produce or check advance and final bills of material, forecast task times and commit to deadlines
• Mentor less experienced CAD designers and share knowledge
• Decide on project and standard details, suggest tool and workflow improvements and use document management and collaboration tools

Required profile

• 20+ years of relevant experience
• 2-year technical diploma
• Knowledge of steel detailing practices and industry conventions
• Strong leadership, negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to work up to senior management

Required skills

• Proficient 2D and/or 3D CAD, such as MicroStation and/or AutoCAD
• Proficiency in Tekla preferred
• Geometry, trigonometry, unit conversions, quantity take-offs and basic bills of material
