Principal Design Engineer - Plate Structures

About the role

CB&I Storage Solutions is looking for a Principal Design Engineer in Calgary, Alberta. This individual contributor acts as a subject matter expert for one or more technologies or product lines and often represents CB&I Storage Solutions in code committees and communities of practice. The role covers design and analysis of plate structures such as tanks, vessels, structures, modules, foundations and other site facilities, working independently with minimal supervision and reporting to the Department or Design Manager.

Key responsibilities

• Produce deliverables accurately according to design codes, company standards and customer drawings and specifications.
• Check and sign off design calculations, specifications and other deliverables for customer approval or project use.
• Ensure designs are safe for field erection and use, with constructability in mind.
• Compare designs to as-sold estimates and customer documents and advise the project team of discrepancies and potential change notices.
• Commit to definitive deadlines and coordinate with other project team members.
• Mentor and transfer knowledge to less experienced plate structures engineers and oversee their technical content, safety and quality.
• Make decisions on project-specific details, generate improvement ideas for tools and workflows, and implement improvements.
• Contribute to the technical body of knowledge in the area of expertise.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural or Mechanical Engineering.
• Recognized subject matter expert with 15+ years of relevant experience.
• Professional Engineering License in at least one province.
• Experience with storage tanks and/or pressure vessels and familiarity with their design codes (API 650, API 620, ASME Section VIII Div 1/Div 2).
• Strong written and oral communication skills; French is an asset.
