Research Associate – Wildfire Cost Study

About the role

The Department of Forest Resources Management at UBC is seeking a full‑time Research Associate to lead a national study on the economic costs of wildfire across Canada. The role will run for two years starting September 1, 2026, with potential extension based on grant funding.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct a comprehensive literature review on wildfire‑related costs in Canada.
• Identify data gaps, existing datasets, and key researchers in the field.
• Develop and coordinate a research plan, including pursuit of additional funding opportunities.
• Prepare findings for a national report and draft peer‑reviewed articles.
• Support communication and dissemination of the final report.

Required profile

• Graduate degree with post‑graduate research experience in wildfire risk mitigation or fire suppression.
• Demonstrated expertise working with diverse stakeholders, especially rural communities.
• Strong publication record and knowledge of social‑science research methods.
• Excellent oral communication and ability to work in a dynamic research team.
• Capacity to meet defined milestones and timelines.
