Project Accountant – Construction (Sub-Contractor sector)

About the role

The client, a leading specialty‑trade construction firm in Burnaby, is seeking a Project Accountant to join its Accounting and Financial team. Reporting to the CFO, you will be responsible for the financial oversight of multiple active construction projects, ensuring accurate cost control, billing, and compliance with contractual requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and report financial performance across several construction projects.
• Maintain project budgets, track labor, material and equipment costs, and prepare cost reports, forecasts and variance analyses.
• Allocate job costs, analyze project profitability and manage client billing, including progress billings and schedules of values.
• Ensure compliance with change‑order processes, holdbacks, progress draws and lien documentation.
• Review vendor and subcontractor invoices for accuracy and contractual compliance.
• Support project teams with change‑order pricing, cost tracking and financial insights.
• Prepare weekly and monthly financial and operational reports and manage collections.
• Set up and close project accounts in the accounting system and assist auditors during year‑end reviews.

Required profile

• Diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related field.
• 3–5+ years of accounting experience, preferably within the construction sector.
• Direct experience with subcontractor accounting is preferred.
• Strong understanding of job costing, progress billing and work‑in‑progress reporting.

Required skills

• Advanced Excel skills for analyzing large data sets.
