Operator I – Heavy Equipment & Road Maintenance

About the role

The Town of Caledon is seeking an Operator I to join its Roads Operations team. This position involves operating and maintaining heavy trucks, dump trucks, plows and loaders while supporting winter and year‑round road maintenance programs.

Key responsibilities

• Operate small and heavy equipment, including light‑duty pickup trucks and tandem‑axle dump units, in compliance with all legislation.
• Participate in winter road maintenance activities such as plowing, sanding and salting.
• Perform road maintenance tasks including ditching, shoulder work, signage installation, tree trimming, and surface repairs.
• Conduct routine equipment inspections, daily cleaning, fluid replenishment, and basic maintenance (bulb replacement, wiper blades, snowplow blades).
• Report road conditions and maintenance needs to the Area Supervisor, Roads.
• Attend required training courses and perform additional labour‑related duties as assigned.

Required profile

• Grade 12 completion or equivalent.
• Valid DZ and/or AZ driver’s licence in good standing (≤3 demerit points).
• Minimum two years’ experience operating heavy equipment under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
• Minimum two years’ experience in road maintenance or construction tasks.
• Ability to work irregular hours, including shift work and adverse weather conditions.
• Physical capability to lift up to 50 lb (25 kg) and perform outdoor labour.
