Laboratory Assistant II – Wastewater Sampling

About the role

The Liquid Waste Services Department is looking for a proactive Laboratory Assistant II to support daily operations of the Metro Vancouver Chemistry Laboratory. You will collect water samples across the region, maintain field and lab equipment, and ensure data quality for wastewater and drinking‑water monitoring.

Key responsibilities

• Collect wastewater, drinking‑water and source‑water samples from designated sites, following aseptic procedures and sampling schedules.
• Operate a Metro Vancouver corporate vehicle, perform routine maintenance, and travel throughout Greater Vancouver.
• Use chlorine kits, dissolved‑oxygen meters and turbidity meters; calibrate equipment and record field measurements.
• Enter sample data, chlorine residuals, temperature and injection rates into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
• Deliver samples to the central laboratory and other approved labs within required timeframes.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory and field equipment, including turbidity buoy probes.
• Assist new or temporary staff with orientation and on‑the‑job training.

Required profile

• Completion of Grade 12 with science courses or equivalent training/experience.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, follow schedules and adapt to changing routes.

Required skills

• Experience with chlorine kits, dissolved‑oxygen meters and turbidity meters.
• Proficiency in using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
• Vehicle operation and basic maintenance.
