Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) / Locator

About the role

Black & McDonald’s Calgary Utilities team is expanding and seeks a committed, collaborative professional to operate directional drilling equipment for underground utility installations. Reporting to the Project Manager, the HDD Operator/Locator ensures safe, accurate drilling while maintaining equipment and adhering to site specifications.

Key responsibilities

• Safely operate the directional drill to install underground utilities, including residential areas.
• Perform basic maintenance and fueling/greasing inspections of the drill equipment.
• Read and interpret blueprints, stakes, signage, and site plans.
• Coordinate daily equipment activities with drivers and operators.
• Log pre‑operation safety inspections and maintain accurate records.
• Perform general labour duties as required.

Required profile

Required skills

• High School Diploma.
• Minimum 5 years experience operating HDD rigs (Vermeer D20 x 22 Series 3, Vermeer 24X40).
• Valid Alberta Class 1 or Class 3 driver’s licence with a clean three‑year abstract.
• Valid CSTS/Ground Disturbance ticket.
• Construction safety certifications: Confined Space Awareness/Rescue, Fall Arrest, WHMIS, First Aid.
