HLI Preclinical Service Manager

About the role

The HLI Preclinical Service Manager leads the largest core facility within the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation at UBC. This senior position oversees animal‑care operations, facility maintenance, and research support to ensure high productivity and compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and operational planning for the preclinical core, improving productivity and efficiency.
• Oversee animal‑care activities, facility maintenance, renovations, and space utilization.
• Guide investigators on experimental design, procedures, and equipment use.
• Liaise with principal investigators, user groups, university departments, vendors, and industry partners to anticipate space and resource needs.
• Select, interview, train, evaluate, and discipline supervisory and technical staff.
• Develop project timelines, set priorities, monitor expenditures, and manage budgets and equipment procurement.
• Ensure a safe work environment by coordinating first‑aid training, accident prevention, and return‑to‑work programs.

Required profile

• Proven leadership experience in a research or animal‑care facility.
• Strong knowledge of animal research practices and experimental design.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
• Ability to manage budgets, schedules, and facility projects.
• Commitment to health‑and‑safety standards.
