Description du poste

About the role

Aviva is looking for a Forensic Fire Engineer specializing in electrical fire origin and cause investigations. The role provides in-house forensic engineering consulting to the Claims team, covering detailed field examinations, technical analysis of electrical systems and components, and comprehensive reports. It is a hybrid position.

Key responsibilities

  • Investigate losses to determine the origin and cause of fires, explosions and product, equipment and material failures, supporting claims handling, coverage determination and recovery.
  • Conduct field investigations of structure fires, explosions and vehicle or equipment fires, gathering evidence such as witness and fire service interviews, media reports and security video.
  • Analyze losses using established fire investigation methodology and the scientific method, deciding on the most plausible cause and whether design, installation or maintenance met industry standards or building codes.
  • Explain the investigation process to customers, coordinate site access and communicate findings without making coverage decisions.
  • Prepare clear reports and letters for Claims Professionals, leadership and other stakeholders, and guide investigations, including peer review of external opinions.
  • Contribute to multi-disciplinary initiatives and recommend engineering service strategies.

Required profile

  • Bachelor's or postgraduate degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Fire Protection, Electrical Engineering, Applied Sciences or a related field.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in Ontario; licensing elsewhere is an asset.
  • 8 to 10 years of experience in forensic engineering, structural investigation, fire/explosion investigation or failure analysis in insurance.
  • Certification as a Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI).
  • Valid Canadian driver's license, access to a vehicle and willingness to travel across Ontario on short notice.
  • Experience testifying in court and a previous expert qualification preferred.

Required skills

  • Knowledge of fire dynamics, combustion chemistry and technical principles such as flashpoints, vapour density and ignition temperatures.
  • Experience reviewing external forensic opinions and applying legislation such as the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Fire Code, Health and Safety Act and Building Code.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and data analysis.
  • Ability to handle multiple investigations under tight timelines and in inclement weather.

What we offer

  • Salary band of $105,000 to $154,400, with eligibility for an annual bonus, retirement savings, share plan and health benefits.
  • Hybrid flexible work model and career development support.
  • Vacation package with the option to buy 5 extra days off per year.
  • Wellness programs and employee-driven diversity and inclusion programs.
