Forensic Civil Structural Engineer

About the role

Aviva is hiring a Forensic Civil Structural Engineer in Markham, Ontario, as an internal technical resource for its claims team. The role is hybrid and focuses on evaluating structural integrity, design and failure analysis of commercial and residential buildings, assessing damage to buildings, bridges and other structures, and advising on repair feasibility and code compliance. It works closely with claims professionals, underwriters and risk management teams.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate building and structural failures, including foundations, structures and building envelopes, and determine their root causes
• Inspect sites and conduct forensic evaluations to support claims handling, coverage determination and recovery against third parties
• Analyze building system failures, assess damage extent and recommend repair versus replacement
• Document investigations with data, photos and video, secure evidence and perform code compliance reviews
• Prepare clear engineering opinions and reports for claims professionals and stakeholders
• Guide investigations, review external forensic opinions and conduct peer reviews
• Explain the investigation process to customers and coordinate site access
• Contribute to multi-disciplinary initiatives and advise partners on engineering service strategies

Required profile

• Bachelor's or post-graduate degree in civil/structural engineering with P.Eng. designation
• Minimum 8 years of experience in failure and damage analysis, design, construction and maintenance of commercial, residential, institutional and industrial buildings
• Preferred: experience with commercial buildings, property and casualty insurance claims, and court testimony as an expert
• Valid Canadian driver's license, access to a vehicle and willingness to travel across Ontario on short notice
• Willingness to work in inclement weather and at heights such as roofs or scaffolding

Required skills

• Structural design principles, load analysis, material properties and failure mechanisms
• Building codes and regulations such as the Health and Safety Act
• MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
• Ability to communicate complex technical conclusions to non-technical audiences
