Emergency Medicine Physician

About the role

Island Health’s Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking board‑certified emergency physicians to join a progressive, collegial team of more than 20 physicians in the ocean‑front community of Nanaimo, BC. The position is based in the newest, state‑of‑the‑art emergency department that serves as the busiest trauma and referral centre on Vancouver Island.

Key responsibilities

• Provide high‑quality emergency and trauma care to an annual census of approximately 70,000 patients.
• Lead clinical teams, supervise junior staff and trainees, and coordinate with all major specialty services.
• Participate in departmental administration, quality‑improvement initiatives, and educational activities.
• Contribute to research projects and community outreach as desired.

Required profile

• Board certification in Emergency Medicine.
• Current licensure to practice medicine in British Columbia.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a fast‑paced, high‑volume emergency department.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Required skills

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Trauma life support or equivalent training.
• Proficiency with electronic medical record systems.
