Description du poste
About the role
GS Construction, a long-standing general contractor in the Edmonton area specializing in water and sewer rehabilitation and new land development, is looking for a Backfill / Hoe Pack Operator. The operator places and compacts trench material on underground water and sewer projects so that infrastructure is protected and work is completed safely and to standard.
Key responsibilities
- Place trench backfill in proper lift thicknesses using bucket and auxiliary attachments, keeping material evenly spread over the pipe and maintaining trench alignment and design elevations.
- Operate an excavator with a Hoe Pack to compact bedding, backfill and trench material, applying the right vibration pressure and dwell time per lift without damaging pipes or structures.
- Compact carefully around pipes, CC risers and valve casings, keeping casings vertically aligned and avoiding over-pressing or displacing buried infrastructure.
- Inspect hydraulic fittings before attaching them, grease hoe pack and breaker pins regularly, and never use attachments to pry asphalt or concrete.
- Keep the machine in the correct hydraulic mode for compaction and close stick valves when switching attachments.
- Coordinate with the crew using hand signals, radios or verbal instructions, and follow foreman direction and trench sequencing.
- Follow Alberta OHS, ground disturbance rules and company safety protocols, take part in daily hazard assessments and keep the site clean and organized.
- Perform daily checks of fluids, hoses and fittings, and grease, refuel and clean equipment as needed.
Required profile
- 1-2 years of experience operating an excavator, ideally with a Hoe Pack in a water and sewer environment.
- Strong understanding of compaction techniques, trench safety and backfilling procedures.
- Ability to read grade stakes and site plans.
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence with a clean driving record.
- Certifications preferred: CSTS, Ground Disturbance Level II, First Aid/CPR.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all kinds of weather, lifting up to 50 lbs, and working on active sites with heavy equipment, uneven terrain and live underground utilities.
What we offer
- Competitive wages including overtime, with skill-based wage adjustments.
- Bonuses, year-end profit sharing and safety awards.
- Full benefits with no waiting period.
- Modern equipment, training programs and upward advancement based on performance.
