Architect III – Life Sciences Laboratory Planner

About the role

Merrick & Company is seeking an experienced Architect III to lead the design of life‑sciences laboratories in Ottawa. The role involves working within a multidisciplinary team to deliver high‑quality, code‑compliant laboratory facilities for government, academic and private clients.

Key responsibilities

• Lead major design decisions, including spatial planning, aesthetics, material detailing and coordination of engineered building systems.
• Manage architectural projects from programming through construction administration, ensuring schedule and budget compliance.
• Direct and mentor junior architects and designers, delegating work as needed.
• Perform building code reviews, feasibility studies, condition reports and recommendations.
• Collaborate with other disciplines to produce accurate BIM models and construction documents.
• Meet with clients to define and validate project scope.
• Control project costs and facilitate design charrettes.

Required profile

• Minimum seven (7) years of experience as a Life Science Laboratory Planner/Architect.
• Registered architect in the United States or Canada, or able to obtain registration within two years of hire.
• Canadian citizenship or permanent residency with at least Reliability clearance.
• Proven track record of completed laboratory projects and strong written and verbal communication skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD.
• Experience with 3D modeling tools such as SketchUp (preferred) and Revit.
• Competence in Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe Acrobat and PowerPoint.
• Strong knowledge of MS Office applications.
