Animal Care Technician – Research Facility

About the role

The Animal Care Technician provides high‑level care for laboratory animals used in research at the University of British Columbia. Working closely with clinical veterinarians and animal care teams, the technician ensures a clean, well‑stocked, and compliant facility.

Key responsibilities

• Perform daily maintenance and husbandry of small laboratory animals.
• Maintain cleanliness of the facility and manage supplies of food and bedding.
• Operate computerized animal anesthesia machines, diagnostic laboratory equipment, specialized surgical tools, and digital environmental monitoring systems.
• Follow CCAC and UBC Animal Care Committee protocols to prevent disease introduction and research contamination.
• Collaborate with veterinarians, registered veterinary technologists, and researchers to support time‑sensitive studies.
• Adhere to safety procedures, use personal protective equipment, and handle potentially hazardous materials.

Required profile

• Availability for a minimum of three shifts per week, with full‑time training (6‑8 weeks) followed by casual on‑call work.
• Ability to work in a regulated, fast‑paced environment governed by animal care standards.
• Strong attention to detail and strict adherence to standard operating procedures.

Required skills

• Operation of computerized animal anesthesia machines.
• Use of diagnostic laboratory equipment.
• Handling of specialized surgical equipment.
• Digital environmental monitoring tools.
• Knowledge of CCAC and UBC Animal Care Committee regulations.
