Research Assistant/Technician – Animal & Microbial Lab Support

About the role

The University of British Columbia is seeking a Research Assistant/Technician to support daily animal and microbial culturing activities within the Department of Zoology. This position will maintain laboratory standards, assist graduate students and post‑doctoral researchers, and ensure a safe working environment.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain animal colonies and microbial pathogen cultures.
• Prepare experimental equipment, media, and agar plates.
• Autoclave waste, media, tips, and other materials.
• Wash glassware and ensure sterility of all lab tools.
• Assist post‑doctoral fellows and graduate students during experiments.
• Monitor and uphold laboratory safety protocols.

Required profile

• High school graduation with at least one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Willingness to respect diverse perspectives and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
• Preferred: BSc in Biology or related field.
