About the role
The Department of Mining and Materials Engineering at McGill University seeks a Course Lecturer to co‑teach MIME 569 – Electron Beam Analysis of Materials for the Fall 2026 term. The appointment covers roughly 33% of the course workload (about 13 hours) and runs from August 31 to December 4, 2026.
Key responsibilities
- Assist the lead professor in delivering lectures and laboratory sessions on scanning and transmission electron microscopy.
- Prepare and present instructional material covering electron‑specimen interactions, microscope hardware, image contrast, quantitative X‑ray analysis (ZAF), and electron diffraction.
- Evaluate student performance through assignments, labs, and examinations.
- Provide guidance and support to students during hands‑on microscopy sessions.
- Collaborate with Teaching and Learning Services for pedagogical support.
Required profile
- PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Materials Science, Physics, Engineering).
- Extensive research and teaching experience with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).
- Demonstrated ability to explain complex microscopy concepts to undergraduate students.
Required skills
- Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) operation and analysis.
- Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) fundamentals.
- Monte Carlo simulation for electron scattering and X‑ray emission.
- C++ programming for quantitative microscopy models.
- Quantitative X‑ray (ZAF) analysis and electron diffraction interpretation.
