In-House Legal Counsel (Lawyer)

About the role

BIS Safety Software is seeking an In‑House Legal Counsel to join its growing team in Sherwood Park, Alberta. This hands‑on position will serve as the primary legal resource, partnering closely with risk, compliance, and product teams to navigate the complex legal landscape of a SaaS business.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements such as SaaS subscription contracts, MSAs, DPAs, vendor agreements, and NDAs.
• Develop and maintain contract templates, standard clauses, and fallback positions to improve consistency.
• Identify and mitigate legal, regulatory, contractual, and privacy risks before they escalate.
• Act as the legal partner to the Risk and Compliance team, providing guidance and issue analysis.
• Collaborate with Sales, Customer Experience, Product, Engineering, Security, and Finance to understand business operations and legal risk.
• Serve as the organization’s Privacy Officer, ensuring compliance with applicable data‑protection legislation.
• Coordinate with external counsel for specialized matters, managing scope and cost‑effectiveness.
• Create and maintain legal documentation, playbooks, and internal guidance.

Required profile

• Strong foundation in corporate and commercial contracts, especially SaaS and technology agreements.
• Detail‑oriented, resourceful, and able to work independently.
• Excellent analytical skills with a proactive approach to risk identification.
• Ability to partner cross‑functionally and communicate legal concepts to non‑legal stakeholders.
