Head of Department – School of Psychology and Human Development

About the role

The University of East London is seeking a strategic and visionary Head of Department for the School of Psychology and Human Development. This senior academic leader will shape the direction of teaching, research and community engagement across a diverse portfolio of psychology programmes.

Key responsibilities

• Provide overall leadership for the Department, setting academic and research priorities aligned with the School’s mission.
• Oversee curriculum development, quality assurance and accreditation for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes.
• Manage departmental budgets, staffing and resource allocation, including recruitment and professional development of academic staff.
• Foster interdisciplinary collaboration with the School’s other departments (Education, Social Work, Counselling) and external partners.
• Lead strategic initiatives to enhance the Department’s national and international reputation.

Required profile

• Established academic record in psychology or a related discipline, with a strong publication record.
• Experience of senior academic management or departmental leadership in a university setting.
• Demonstrated ability to secure research funding and develop industry‑relevant programmes.
• Commitment to inclusive teaching, social justice and the university’s diversity agenda.
