Communications Specialist – Public Safety

About the role

The Alberta Sheriffs Police Service is seeking a Communications Specialist to deliver clear, accurate, and strategic communications that support its public‑safety mission. You will help educate Albertans, strengthen confidence in the service, and manage media and stakeholder relations.

Key responsibilities

• Research, write, edit and coordinate news releases, web and social media content, speeches, briefing notes and issues‑management products.
• Lead media relations for assigned portfolios, respond to inquiries, pitch stories and arrange interviews.
• Support crisis communications by monitoring media sentiment and developing proactive and reactive messaging.
• Conduct environmental scans and media analysis to inform communication strategies.
• Develop and maintain digital content for the agency’s internet, intranet and social‑media platforms.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external partners, serve as a spokesperson when required, and provide after‑hours on‑call support for urgent communications.

Required profile

• Strong written and verbal communication skills with an empathetic, professional approach.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and manage sensitive information.
• Experience in public‑sector or law‑enforcement communications is an asset.

Required skills

• Proficiency in creating news releases, web content and social‑media posts.
• Media‑relations experience, including pitching and interview coordination.
• Research and analytical skills for media monitoring and issue tracking.
