Vice-President, Communications (University Leadership)

About the role

McMaster University is seeking an experienced and visionary leader to serve as Vice‑President, Communications. Reporting directly to the President, this senior executive will shape the university’s global brand, narrative and reputation across a complex and dynamic environment.

Key responsibilities

• Provide enterprise‑wide leadership for strategic communications, brand and marketing, and government relations.
• Develop and execute a cohesive institutional narrative that aligns with the university’s research, innovation and community leadership.
• Advise senior leadership on reputational and policy matters, influencing public policy and advocacy priorities.
• Build and maintain strategic partnerships with external stakeholders to amplify McMaster’s voice and impact.
• Lead large‑scale organizational change, setting strategic vision and aligning diverse internal and external audiences.

Required profile

• Significant experience leading communications, brand, marketing and government‑relations functions in a complex organization.
• Proven track record of driving enterprise‑wide transformation and managing high‑visibility change initiatives.
• Strong ability to translate complex issues into clear, compelling strategies.
• Exceptional communication and relationship‑building skills with senior leaders, policymakers and external partners.
• Demonstrated judgment in navigating reputational and policy environments.
