Utility Operator I – Municipal Water & Wastewater

About the role
The Town of Morinville is seeking a full‑time Utility Operator I to join its Public Works team. Reporting to the Utilities Team Lead, you will be responsible for the day‑to‑day operation and maintenance of the municipality’s water distribution, wastewater collection, and stormwater systems. The role is primarily outdoors and requires compliance with provincial water and wastewater regulations.
Key responsibilities
- Monitor reservoir levels, pressure, flow rates and alarm systems to ensure efficient operation.
- Inspect, maintain and repair pumps, valves, backup motors, engines and other water, sewer and stormwater assets.
- Conduct pre‑ and post‑trip inspections of flusher trucks and operate vacuum equipment for holding tank service.
- Follow Alberta Environment Code of Practice to deliver safe, potable drinking water.
- Perform confined‑space entry, use H₂S monitors, fall‑arrest systems and traffic control for safety.
- Replace and refurbish infrastructure such as manhole frames, covers and catch basins.
- Operate heavy equipment including loaders, backhoes, tandem‑axle trucks, skid steers and trailers.
- Run regular water quality tests and maintain GIS and asset‑ID records.
- Provide on‑call support on a rotational basis for emergencies, alarms and public complaints.
Required profile
- High school diploma (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Minimum 1 year of experience in utility operations.
- Valid Class 3 driver’s licence with Q endorsement (air brakes) or ability to obtain.
- Provincial Certification Level 1 in Water Distribution.
- Provincial Certification Level 1 in Wastewater Collection.
Required skills
- Class 3 driver’s licence with Q endorsement.
- Provincial Water Distribution Level 1 certification.
- Provincial Wastewater Collection Level 1 certification.
- Familiarity with the S.C.A.D.A (Supervisor Control And Data Acquisition) system.
- Experience using GIS software and asset‑identification tools.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint).
- Ability to operate and maintain loaders, backhoes, skid steers and related heavy equipment.
