Utility Operator – Heavy Equipment Operator for Civil Projects

About the role

We are seeking experienced Utility Operators to join our Civil Division. The role supports civil construction projects such as underground utility installations, earthworks, site development and excavation activities.

Key responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment including excavators, loaders, skid steers and other machinery required for underground utility and civil construction work.
• Perform trenching, excavating, backfilling, grading, sloping, material handling and site preparation.
• Safely excavate around existing underground utilities, pipelines, structures and other infrastructure.
• Support the installation of water, sewer, storm and related underground utilities.
• Read and interpret grade stakes, site plans, blueprints and project specifications.
• Conduct daily equipment inspections and routine maintenance to ensure safe operation.
• Collaborate with supervisors, pipe crews, labourers and other operators to complete work safely and on schedule.
• Maintain a clean and safe work area and report equipment issues, utility conflicts or safety concerns immediately.

Required profile

• Previous experience as a Utility Operator in civil construction, with strong experience in underground utility installation and excavation.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Ability to read grades and work accurately to project specifications.
• Flexibility to work overtime or shift work as required.

Required skills

• Operation of excavators, loaders and skid steers.
• Use of GPS machine‑control systems such as Topcon or Trimble.
• Reading and interpreting grade stakes, site plans and blueprints.
