About the role
The Town of Oakville is seeking a qualified Tree Protection Inspector to enforce private and public tree protection by‑laws, support site alteration projects, and ensure the health and safety of the urban forest. This permanent, full‑time position reports to the Supervisor of Forest Protection and involves both field inspections and court testimony.
Key responsibilities
- Inspect properties for compliance with private and public tree protection by‑laws, site alteration regulations, and related policies.
- Provide information and assistance to the public and stakeholders regarding tree protection requirements.
- Identify by‑law contraventions, engage responsible parties, and, if necessary, initiate prosecution under the Provincial Offences Act.
- Document investigations thoroughly, both manually and electronically, to support enforcement and legal actions.
- Collaborate with site alteration applicants, internal departments, and utilities to ensure compliance during construction projects.
- Maintain accurate records, including a tree database, permit applications, and inspection reports.
- Serve as an expert witness in Provincial Offences Court, testifying under oath.
- Conduct tree hazard evaluations and tree appraisals following industry standards.
Required profile
- 3‑year Diploma or Degree in Forestry or Arboriculture.
- 3‑5 years of professional experience in urban forestry or related fields.
- Certified Arborist status with the International Society of Arboriculture.
- Knowledge of current industry practices and municipal by‑law interpretation.
- Ability to read land surveys, specifications, and policy documents.
- Self‑starter, resourceful, and capable of working with minimal supervision.
