Tool Design Engineer

About the role
M1 Composites is seeking a Tool Design Engineer to create, develop, and support tooling used in the manufacture and repair of aerospace components. The role bridges engineering, manufacturing, and quality to ensure robust, compliant, and ergonomic tooling solutions for composite and metallic structures.
Key responsibilities
- Design and develop molds, jigs, fixtures, templates, assembly aids, and repair tools for composite and sheet‑metal components.
- Translate engineering, repair, and manufacturing data into practical tooling solutions.
- Create 3D models, detailed drawings, and technical documentation using CAD software.
- Support tooling from concept through fabrication, validation, and shop‑floor implementation.
- Collaborate with manufacturing to ensure tooling is safe, ergonomic, and fit‑for‑purpose.
- Develop tooling aligned with approved repair data and aerospace standards (Transport Canada, FAA, EASA).
- Assist with first‑article inspections, tooling qualification, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide technical support for tooling issues, modifications, and root‑cause analysis.
- Maintain configuration control, revision management, and proper documentation of tooling designs.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- 5–8 years of tooling design experience in an aerospace manufacturing or MRO environment.
- Experience with composite and sheet‑metal structures is strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, tolerancing, and materials.
- Excellent English communication skills, both oral and written.
Required skills
- CAD software (3D modeling and drafting).
- Tooling design for molds, jigs, fixtures, and repair aids.
- Understanding of aerospace standards (Transport Canada, FAA, EASA).
- First‑article inspection and tooling qualification.
- Root‑cause analysis and technical problem solving.
- Configuration control and revision management.
