Staff Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

As a Staff Mechanical Design Engineer on Tesla's Automation team in Toronto, you will create cutting‑edge machinery that supports Optimus, cell manufacturing, energy, and vehicle production. The role blends conceptual design with hands‑on problem solving to advance the factory of the future.

Key responsibilities

• Lead conceptual equipment development while balancing specifications, process needs, layout complexity, cost, and lead‑time.
• Drive equipment from proof‑of‑concept to full‑scale production, improving tolerance, stability, automation, and intelligence.
• Create 3D CAD models, detailed GD&T drawings, mechanical BOMs, and safety/maintenance documentation.
• Perform motion studies and finite‑element analyses for complex designs, applying dynamics, force, and stress analysis.
• Select and integrate commercial components such as sensors, servos, and pneumatic actuators.
• Provide mechanical engineering support to fabrication, assembly, project management, and production teams to troubleshoot and enhance machine performance.

Required profile

• 5+ years of hands‑on experience as a mechanical, manufacturing, or electromechanical design engineer.
• Strong fundamentals in engineering physics and a detail‑oriented, organized work style.
• Ability to work in a fast‑paced, high‑responsibility environment and travel domestically and internationally as needed.
• Excellent communication, presentation, and teamwork skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency with SolidWorks, PDM, and AutoCAD (or similar CAD/CAE tools).
• Strong understanding of drafting standards and GD&T (e.g., ASME Y14.5).
• Experience conducting FEA and motion studies.
• Knowledge of dynamics, force and stress analysis, and solid mechanics.
