About the role
Join the Infotainment team at Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies Canada as a Staff Android OS Engineer. You will shape the core Android Automotive operating system for next‑generation electric vehicles, focusing on foundational components, system tuning and security.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, maintain and customize core Android OS components, including frameworks and services for Android Automotive.
- Own the full software development lifecycle: requirements analysis, architecture, design, implementation, code reviews and quality assurance.
- Design and implement Hardware Abstraction Layers to interface vehicle‑specific hardware.
- Optimize system performance, boot time, memory usage and overall stability.
- Integrate new features, debug complex system‑level issues and ensure robust inter‑ECU communication.
- Write and review performance‑critical code across core OS modules.
- Implement critical system features such as interprocess communication, memory management, security sandboxing, networking and power/performance management.
- Collaborate with hardware, infrastructure and application teams to evolve the vehicle software stack.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of professional experience in Android platform development.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to work autonomously and within cross‑functional teams.
Required skills
- Deep expertise in Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and Android Automotive frameworks.
- Proficiency in C, C++, Java and Kotlin.
- Experience with Hardware Abstraction Layers (HAL) development.
- System performance tuning, boot time optimization, memory management.
- Implementation of interprocess communication, security sandboxing and networking.
- Debugging of system‑level issues and integration of vehicle‑specific hardware.
