Speech & Language Assistant

About the role

Seabird Island is seeking a Speech & Language Assistant to support culturally informed speech‑language services for children in the community. Working under the direct supervision of a Speech‑Language Pathologist, you will help deliver therapy, prepare materials, and document progress to promote communication and cognitive development.

Key responsibilities

• Implement therapy activities based on individualized service plans developed by the SLP.
• Deliver speech and language support to children in one‑on‑one or small‑group settings.
• Prepare session materials, visual supports, and home‑program resources.
• Observe, document, and track each child’s performance and participation.
• Assist the SLP with screenings, assessments, and program evaluation.
• Organise and maintain therapy tools, resources, and equipment.
• Schedule appointments, maintain service records, and perform clerical duties.
• Ensure safety precautions in classrooms and homes, and maintain equipment and supplies.
• Participate in First Nations community activities, in‑service training, and team meetings.

Required profile

• Diploma in Speech and Language Assistant, Communication Disorders Assistant, or related post‑secondary training (or actively pursuing).
• 1–2 years of experience supporting children in educational or clinical settings.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with young children and families.
• Valid class 5 driver’s licence with reliable, insured transportation for community‑based work.
• Commitment to Indigenous cultural safety, community values, and the guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band).
