About the role
The University of Toronto’s Innis College is seeking a Sessional Lecturer to teach INI101H1F: Writing, Advocacy, and Social Media. This first‑year course introduces students to the city as a creative environment that promotes social justice, equality, and civic engagement. The role involves delivering in‑person instruction to a cohort of approximately 25 students on Thursdays from 2 pm to 5 pm.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver all lectures and facilitate class discussions for the full course.
- Design, grade, and return assignments, exams, and final marks in accordance with the provided syllabus.
- Maintain accurate records of student performance and submit final grades on schedule.
- Hold weekly office hours and respond promptly to student inquiries via email or appointment.
- Follow the existing course outline and adapt teaching methods as needed.
Required profile
- MA in journalism, urban studies, writing, media studies, or a closely related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum three years of experience teaching writing, journalism, media, urban studies, or a related discipline.
- Professional background as a writer, journalist, editor, critic, or public communicator with emphasis on cities, civic life, advocacy, or social media.
- Preferred: publication record in journalism, nonfiction, criticism, or urban writing.
- Demonstrated interest in pedagogy and familiarity with the range of undergraduate writing abilities.
- Knowledge of Toronto’s civic, cultural, and media landscape.
