Sessional Lecturer – Writing About Literature

About the role

The University of Toronto’s Department of English is seeking a Sessional Lecturer to teach ENG281H1S – Writing About Literature during the Winter 2027 term. This three‑hour weekly, in‑person course introduces undergraduate students to the skills and contexts required for university‑level literary analysis and academic writing.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and deliver a course outline, syllabus, and marking scheme.
• Plan and lead weekly seminars, including lectures, discussions, and writing‑intensive tutorials.
• Design, administer, and grade assignments, tests, and exams in accordance with university regulations.
• Provide regular office hours for academic counselling and respond to student enquiries, appeals, and petitions.
• Submit final grades and maintain course records as required by the Faculty of Arts & Science Academic Handbook.

Required profile

• PhD in literary studies or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated ability to teach academic writing skills and literary analysis at the undergraduate level.
• Experience with academic publishing or public‑facing academic writing is preferred.
