Sessional Lecturer – Mental Illness and the Criminal Justice System

About the role

The University of Toronto Mississauga is seeking a sessional lecturer to teach the course “Mental Illness and the Criminal Justice System.” The role involves delivering three‑hour in‑person lectures each Tuesday from January to April 2027, guiding students through forensic mental health issues within the justice system.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and deliver weekly lectures covering legal and medical definitions of mental disorder, state‑compelled treatment, fitness to stand trial, and the Review Board process.
• Assess student work, assign grades, and provide feedback.
• Collaborate with co‑instructors if the course is co‑taught, sharing teaching load and salary proportionally.
• Maintain course materials and stay current with Ontario criminal law and mental health policies.

Required profile

• Ph.D. (completed or ABD) in Psychology, Law, or a closely related field, or a completed LLB/JD/LLM with relevant criminal law practice experience.
• Demonstrated expertise in forensic mental health, expert‑witness evidence, and issues such as assessment orders, fitness, and not‑criminally‑responsible‑due‑to‑mental‑disorder (NCRMD).
• If co‑teaching, both instructors must meet the minimum qualifications.
