Sessional Lecturer – Introduction to Sikhism

About the role

The Department of Historical Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga is seeking a qualified sessional lecturer to teach "Introduction to Sikhism" during the Fall 2026 term. This 12‑week course explores the historical development of Sikh doctrines, practices, and institutions from medieval Punjab to the colonial era.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and deliver lectures on Fridays, 9:00‑11:00 AM.
• Design, administer, and grade assignments, tests, and final examinations.
• Respond to student inquiries and maintain accurate grade records.
• Hold regular office hours for student support.
• Supervise any teaching assistants assigned to the course.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in Religion, History, or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrated competence in Sikh studies and the ability to teach the course content.
• Proven effectiveness as an instructor at the university level.
• Preference for candidates who have previously held Sessional Lecturer II or III appointments.

Required skills

• Strong academic research and writing abilities.
• Effective oral communication and presentation skills.
• Experience with course management and assessment tools.
