Senior Mobile Software Engineer

About the role

Manulife's US Retirement technology organization is hiring a Senior Mobile Software Engineer in Waterloo, Ontario. You will design, build and deliver high-quality mobile and backend solutions for Retirement customers, working across the full stack with React Native applications and NestJS services. You will partner with Product Owners, UX designers, architects and engineers to deliver digital experiences.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, test and maintain full-stack features across React Native mobile apps and Node.js backend services.
• Contribute to system architecture and technical design, including APIs, data models, caching strategies and service decomposition.
• Build performant, accessible mobile experiences using React Native, Expo, React Query and Uniwind.
• Maintain backend services integrated with Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) and Redis.
• Take part in architecture reviews, propose solutions and document design decisions.
• Improve CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions and add observability with New Relic.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews, pairing and knowledge sharing.
• Work with product and design teams to turn requirements into scalable technical solutions.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience in full-stack software development.
• Ability to make architectural decisions (API design, scalability, performance).
• Strong understanding of testing strategies (unit, integration, E2E).
• Excellent communication and ability to explain technical trade-offs.

Required skills

• TypeScript across frontend and backend.
• React Native and Expo.
• Node.js backend development.
• Redis (caching, queues, session management).
• Azure cloud services, including AKS.
• GitHub Actions and New Relic or similar observability tools.

Nice to have: Tailwind or Uniwind, mobile security and secure storage, Kubernetes networking, Istio or service meshes, event-driven architectures, open-source contributions.

What we offer

• Expected salary range of $113,000 to $163,000 CAD, with possible incentive compensation.
