Research Associate in Next-Generation RNA Therapeutics

About the role
The Michael Smith Laboratories at the University of British Columbia seeks a Research Associate to join Dr. Anna Blakney's multidisciplinary team focused on next‑generation RNA therapeutics. The role involves developing and optimizing models that link mitochondrial metabolism to RNA‑based vaccine and therapy efficacy.
Key responsibilities
- Design and validate in‑vitro and in‑vivo models for studying mitochondrial dynamics and cellular responses to RNA formulations.
- Investigate metabolic and redox signaling pathways influencing cell fate, immune responses, and functional recovery.
- Apply advanced imaging (confocal microscopy, fluorescence lifetime imaging) and bioenergetic profiling (OCR, ECAR, ROS, membrane potential) to assess therapeutic effects.
- Explore integration of RNA therapies with photobiomodulation and metabolic modulation strategies.
- Collaborate with a cross‑disciplinary team to translate molecular findings into pre‑clinical RNA medicine designs.
Required profile
- PhD in biophysics, biochemistry, molecular biology or a related biomedical science.
- Strong publication record and experience in pre‑clinical model development, including rodent studies.
- Demonstrated expertise in mitochondrial assays, advanced imaging, and tissue regeneration methods.
- Evidence of translational impact such as patent drafting, grant writing, and mentorship of trainees.
